2025 Ford Super Duty® F-450® XL in Carbonized Gray pulling a camper down a winding road

Standard vs. High-Output Ford Power Stroke® Engine Comparison

The Super Duty® lineup is the ultimate choice in the Ford truck roster. These pickups are built first and foremost for work: there's almost no trailer that a properly equipped F-350 or F-450 can't hitch up to. The max Super Duty® tow rating of 40,000 pounds showcases this clearly. And what helps make this massive capability possible? The 6.7-liter Ford Power Stroke® diesel engine.

For 2026, the Power Stroke® engine is offered in two configurations: there's the standard-output engine, and then there's the High Output Power Stroke®. To help you understand how these two differ, see our standard vs. High Output Power Stroke® diesel engine comparison. Compare Diesel Ford Super Duty® Specs

The first thing to know about these two engines is that they are more similar than they are different. Both share the same displacement, the same basic hardware, even the same compression ratio and turbocharger system. So, what's the difference? Essentially, how Ford has tuned them. The standard engine generates 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque; the High-Output version has been massaged to make up to 500 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque. With figures like this, any diesel Ford Super Duty® in West Texas is vaulted to the top of its segment in terms of raw power.

Because even the standard diesel has such a deep well of torque, a back-to-back sampling of both engines in an unloaded truck will likely leave you struggling to discern the power difference. Hitch them up to 10 or 15 tons of trailer, however, and the more powerful engine makes its case: pulling up a grade or traveling over a dirt or gravel surface with a trailer becomes even more effortless when you have an additional 25 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque at your disposal. Depending on how you use your truck, that may be well worth the upgrade to an H.O. diesel Super Duty® near Muleshoe.

Which Ford Diesel Engine is Best for Me?

It's long been known that diesel is simply the best option when you need to frequently haul or tow serious weight, and the Power Stroke® V8 is the latest engine to back up that fact. By offering it in two states of tune, Ford is giving West Texas HD truck shoppers more options depending on their needs. For those constantly towing at the upper edge of their truck's limits, the High-Output V8 diesel is clearly the best choice. For everyone else, the standard-output powertrain still makes massive amounts of power and will have no trouble keeping almost any size trailer on the move.
